Being Allies?

The starting point for this discussion will be the question of negotiating non- Indigenous support of Indigenous struggles in Australia under the prevailing colonising conditions. Clare will discuss historical and contemporary examples which illustrate the fraught nature of negotiations between non-Indigenous supporters and Indigenous peoples about the nature of that support. Sources of tension, the work put in to maintain activist/ally relationships, and the qualities of these relationships will be explored.

Te Whare wins again

Richard Green's film - Te Whare, The House, has won another award, this time at the 2010 Honolulu International Film Festival. It has been chosen to receive the Silver Lei Award for Excellence in Filmmaking:
"Our judges felt that your film demonstrated superior and standout filmmaking and is deserving of one of our most esteemed awards.

Your film was among the very best of the several hundreds of films submitted from over 30 countries around the world.

Manukau ACE Provider wins award

A community education organisation supported in its infancy by AWEA won a national award in Adult Learners Week 2009. Te Hononga ki ngā Tupuna Trust was one of two organisations to receive a Dynamic Community Learning Award for its innovative Te Reo programme. You can read all about the Ōtara-based classes in the Adult and Community Education Newsletter, Spring 2009.

Thanks to Manukau City Council

We've been especially lucky with sponsorship lately. Thanks to the Manukau City Council, Christine was able to attend the very large Community Economic Development Conference in Waitakere last week. Lots of content, including input from overseas, which stimulated our thinking about how social enterprise activities can help make the community sector more financially sustainable. Once the organisers have recovered a bit, all of the presentations will be available on the website.

Drupal confirmed as the CMS to use

Admittedly the 100 plus people at the Drupal South Conference were more than a little biased towards the Drupal Content Management System for creating websites but the 3 days in Wellington confirmed for me that Drupal has amazing potential for empowering community organisations with their own affordable and manageable websites.

In a Content Management System the users put in their own content.

Drupal!

We're moving ahead with our website learning! This weekend I'm off to a DrupalSouth conference for people who use the Drupal Content Management system to make websites (that's us here at AWEA) and, just to mention some well-known ones so you can see what I mean:

Find a course: ACE for Us 0800 223 487

The Te Kupenga o Manukau Adult and Community Education network has set up a database of adult and community education courses in South Auckland. It's for people who don't have access to computers but do have a phone. You call the 0800 number and a friendly person looks on the database of courses for you. Courses can be added to the database this way too - so if you are a provider and your course is not included (and you would like it to be) please call.
