How do I upload a file so others can download it?

This lesson shows how to upload a file to a page and how to embed a link to it after it has been uploaded. This applies to both Drupal 6 and Drupal 7.

1. Attach a file

1. Open the Edit window and click on File Attachments to open it
2. Click on choose a file (to upload one from your computer). The file will appear next to 'Choose file'
3. Click on attach
4. Go to the bottom of the page and click on Save

2. Identify the path to the file

Open the Edit window again. The information needed to create a link to the file is the file path below the window showing the uploaded file.

Go back to your text

Enter the text that you want the file linked to.

Copy the file path information

1. Hold down your mouse button and drag your cursor over the file path from: www to the end. Select Copy from your keyboard (or any other method of copying)
2. If you tick the List box the file will be listed on your page. Sometimes this can be useful.

Highlight the text you want the file to link to

Hold down your mouse button and drag your cursor over the text that will become the link to the file

Click on the Link icon in the visual editor

Click on the Link icon to open it

Paste the copied link

1. Paste the file path that you copied: www ........... /Test file.docx into the URL box. Leave out the http://
2. Click OK to save
3. The highlighted words will turn blue, showing that the link to the file has been made.
4. Click Save at the bottom of the page

Click on the live link to download the file
