The principal objective of the current AWEA constitution is the same as for other Workers Educational Associations in Aotearoa New Zealand:
the advancement, encouragement, and provision of adult and community education that promotes a just and equitable society, in accordance with te Tiriti o Waitangi.
As completely independent organisations each WEA interprets these concepts differently.
For Auckland WEA:
* community education is that which is defined by the learners
* a just and equitable society is one in which people are not advantaged by virtue of age, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc; at present we are focusing on advantages based on being members of the majority cultures
* Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Māori Text) indicates rights and responsibilities which form the basis of a relationship that allowed tangata Tiriti to migrate here on certain terms.
* While the Treaty Resource Centre is a major part of the AWEA's current response to this commitment, the AWEA is also trying to develop enduring relationships with tangata whenua.
